Both during and after wearing braces, removable orthodontic appliances can be very helpful in the process of straightening your child’s teeth and keeping them straightened. At Children’s Dental Group, it is our goal to not only offer your child the best level of alignment for his or her teeth and jaws, but to do so in the most efficient and effective way possible. Removable orthodontic appliances such as retainers and elastics help our Eagle Rock children’s orthodontist to do just that.

It’s hard to picture the results of wearing braces when your child is first being fitted. But with patience, the steady progression of moving her or his teeth into the ideal position will be complete. Once your child has achieved that worthy goal with the help of our Eagle Rock children’s orthodontist, the focus shifts to maintaining it. After braces come off, there is a period of time where your child’s teeth are prone to shifting as they settle into their new and proper place. This is where a removable retainer comes in.

Exactly how long your child will need to wear a retainer will depend upon various factors. Our Eagle Rock children’s orthodontist will consult with you on this. It is vital that your child wear his or her retainer at the times that have been established and discussed. You will need to stay on top of that with your child. When you consider the benefits of keeping her or his teeth in straight and well aligned, the need to wear a retainer is a very small price to pay.

Elastics, on the other hand, come in handy for assisting while your child is wearing braces. As you might imagine, moving teeth is not easy an sometimes your child’s braces may need some help. Elastics are simply special strong rubber bands that adds the needed force and pressure to guide your child’s teeth in the right direction. The elastics have to be worn all day as well as all night and are changed every day. If your child is tempted to remove the elastics, remind him or her that when the elastics are not being worn, it is only increasing the amount of time the braces will be worn. Our Eagle Rock children’s orthodontist wants your child to have every advantage when it comes to better aligned teeth. Removable orthodontic appliances represent a distinct advantage whose benefits you will want your child to experience.

If your child or teen has a malocclusion or simply has crooked or misaligned teeth that they are concerned about then schedule a visit with one of our Eagle Rock orthodontists. Here at Children’s Dental Group, we aim to provide a fun and comfortable environment for kids and teens that will help them feel at ease. Upon your first visit, you meet with one of our many esteemed orthodontists who will give your child a preliminary exam. During this initial examination, one of our orthodontists will thoroughly examine your child’s teeth and their supporting structures. They will also establish an oral health baseline to determine whether any other work needs to be done prior to orthodontic treatment such as a cavity filling or even extracting a tooth. There are a number of reasons that may require that a tooth, or even a few teeth, is extracted prior to orthodontic treatment.

Orthodontic treatment is traditionally administered once all of the baby teeth have fallen out and the permanent teeth have emerged or have begun to emerge. If your child has few baby teeth remaining, they may be taken out before beginning the orthodontic treatment. Other times, there may be too much crowding and there is not enough room for all of the teeth once the alignment is made, so some teeth may be extracted to provide room for your child’s new smile. Removing some teeth may also aid if fixing an underbite or overbite. These are just a few of the reasons why teeth may be removed, but your Eagle Rock orthodontist will let you know what procedures are necessary upon visiting us here at Children’s Dental Group.
